APIs Can Help Solve Brexit Data Problems
New research from MuleSoft shows that 54% of UK businesses say Brexit has caused them problems with data access and management.
The problem is not just British. 40% of German companies and 39% of French companies also say that Brexit has made it more difficult for them to access and manage data.
The results also suggest that companies may struggle to navigate future regulatory changes. While there may currently be close regulatory alignment between the UK and the EU, the inability of businesses to unlock and act quickly on data may limit their ability to respond to changes in the future.
“Brexit has exposed just how under-prepared many companies are for the challenges of accessing and managing data in an increasingly digital economy,” said Justin Wilson, UK official and Ireland at MuleSoft. “At a time when businesses need to be more agile than ever, the UK’s departure from the EU has made it harder for them to tap into the data they need to do so. There is also the problem of skills shortages. high on their agenda, the exodus of skilled IT professionals has left many companies without the resources they need to complete these projects. “
The need for a more agile approach to data integration and digital transformation means that API-based connectivity will be essential. APIs can be used to connect supply chain data between multiple stakeholders, so UK and European businesses can gain the visibility needed to ensure their products are available where they are needed and reduce disruption. An API-based approach also re-imagines digital assets as a network of reusable capabilities that anyone can take advantage of.
“APIs help businesses overcome many of the most pressing issues they face in the aftermath of Brexit by making the process of bringing disparate data sources together a lot easier,” Wilson adds. “This more flexible approach to integration also allows businesses to bundle their digital capabilities into a series of reusable building blocks. Today, anyone in the business, not just the IT team, can leverage these pre-existing IT capabilities to drive digital innovation.
